Your alarm clock is going to go off in 3 hours, but you are still WIDE AWAKE! You know that you need to be asleep, you need your rest, but for some reason, your EYES ARE WIDE OPEN! Has this ever happened to you? Perhaps it’s because you have to do something in the morning and you are anxious or excited and you just CANNOT SLEEP! Maybe you are worried or confused about some situation or life event and you are just RESTLESS! Here are 8 ways to get some shut-eye…
Read a book-
Now, don’t go for that intense, suspense that you just can’t put down, but read something that is slightly boring, or at least won’t keep your attention for long. Although, I love love love the bible, if I’ve been trying to go to sleep, God’s word alone is enough for me. It’s probably His way of giving me rest.
Drink warm milk-
I’m not sure how well this helps, but it does contain tryptophan (the amino acid best known for being in turkey), which when released into the brain produces serotonin—a serenity-boosting neurotransmitter. It’s worth the try.
No, really, I mean how boring does counting sheep sound right? A total snooze fest- this has to help at least a little bit.
Play some soft spa music-
This is one of my favorite ways to get some shut-eye. If you have ever gotten a massage and fallen asleep, it may not have just been because of the relaxing of your tense muscles as the masseuse got out every knot and kink. That spa music is pure relaxation.
Take deep breaths-
Speaking of relaxing, we all know that when you have an anxiety attack or need to calm down, you are told to take deep breaths right? Well, if you are anxious or worried about something, taking deep breaths should calm you down so you can get some sleep.
Hold on to a stuffed animal/pillow-
Perhaps its just me, but I always loved stuffed animals as a child. They were so comforting and just gave me a sense of security. If you can’t sleep and don’t have a stuffed animal in your bed, um, yeah, grab a pillow. The tight squeeze can give you comfort and ease you into a resting state.
This is really my number 1, but I like to put it as 7, the number of completion. 🙂 God is greater than any of your problems and He will give you rest. Just pray and ask Him for it. If you aren’t a believer, now is a perfect time to try Jesus. Go ahead, pray!
Focus on a word and keep repeating it softly-
I remember hearing about this years ago, and I haven’t tried it in a while, but you go ahead and choose some random word. “Blue” is the one I chose years ago and just kept repeating softly. You’ll get so tired of saying that word that you will doze right off.
Rest well my lovelies…
Have you ever woken up but by around 2pm you realize that you never really “woke up?” You’re feeling like a zombie because you never really did shake off sleep. You feel like a fish out of water…
How to shake off sleep…
- Wash your face with cold water- If you are outside of the home and you can get to a sink, just splash some water on your face. This will do wonders to wake you up.
- Do some stretches- trying not to yawn, just do some basic stretches to get the blood flowing better. Increase air to your lungs by placing your hands behind your head and pulling your elbows backward.
- Drink some water- guzzling water seems to help me real quick and of course H2O is amazing for your mind and body. Cold water may be best if you’re extremely tired. Then splash some on your face if that doesn’t work. 😉
- Find something that makes you laugh- No seriously, laughing wakes you up! I mean have you ever noticed when you can’t sleep, you tend to laugh at everything, so try it in reverse. Find something funny on YouTube. I recommend LizaKoshy.
- Do some random exercises- Yes, any type of exercise, movement, workout! Just get up and dance around, even for a few moments. If you’re sitting at a desk, just move what you can.
Hopefully these little tricks will wake you up and help shake off sleep!
So, I know this blog is all about speaking life online and motivating others, but right now, I’m feeling a bit meh! Uh, I think I even have the wrong Emoji plugged in because this one is looking more sad and pitiful. I’m not really feeling sad or pitiful, just a little, well, meh. I know that things will look up and that life is full of challenges, changes, and ups and downs, so ultimately I’m not going to let anything get the best of me.
Okay, so here comes the motivating part. All of us go through times of struggle, anxiety, confusion, or even depression, however, the way we deal with these times and circumstances is what gets us through and builds us up. I’d like to think of it as moments used to build character, step outside of ourselves, rely on the strength of our creator, and time to reflect and redirect. With all of that being said, I for one feel better already and I hope that I have encouraged someone else as well. So, just hold on, and hold out because although things may not be as you wish this moment, things do and always will change. Keep pressing forward and keep each other lifted. May God bless and keep you all in His perfect peace!
I am so excited to introduce my new audio book, Equal Justice: The Courage of Ada Sipuel. I had a blast narrating this wonderful memoir about the life of a great civil rights leader that many of us may have never even known about. The author, William Bernhardt does an amazing job outlining the events and obstacles in the life of Ada Louis Sipuel Fisher as she applied for admission into law school in order to challenge the state’s segregation laws and to become a lawyer. She faced many setbacks and fought against the “separate but equal” laws of her time… I believe you all will enjoy listening to this story as much as I enjoyed narrating it! Thank you in advance for your support and happy listening!!

Motivation is the driving force behind the who, what, when, where, and why we do what we do in any given circumstance. According to Wikipedia, motivation “gives the reason for people’s actions, desires, and needs. Motivation can also be defined as one’s direction to behavior, or what causes a person to want to repeat a behavior and vice versa.” Many times, I have asked myself, what is my motivation whenever I am trying something new, would like to accomplish a goal, or wondering why I am even attempting to do something different.
I am sure we all have those moments in time when it is more challenging to find motivation than other times. I have found that the following 10 steps have helped me get motivated and perhaps can help you at some point as well.
How to find motivation…
Take a moment to just sit still, relax, and meditate.
Reflect on what you have already accomplished.
Think about what you would like to accomplish next.
Make a list of short-term goals.
Make a list of long-term goals.
Listen to some soft instrumental music, nature sounds, and/or worship songs.
Read the Bible.
Speak Life, saying what you can and will do.
Repeat as much as necessary.
These are just my personal 10 steps that I find motivating in determining my motivation many times in life. These 10 steps are suggestive and what has worked for me personally in the past. I am not a doctor, scientist, theologian, or any type of guru, but I just want to share what helps me in my times of needing to find my motivation. I hope it will help someone else.
Does anyone know who originally stated this quote… positivity breeds positivity? If you know or find out, please let me know so that I can give credit to whom credit is due.
I often say this and truly believe it. Positivity definitely is the catalyst for a healthy life. In my original post, I let you all know that healthy living is what this blog centers around and how healthiness is not just about eating healthy and exercising. I recently came across this positivity blog that has a post of several motivating quotes that I think are extremely helpful and inspiring. Think on these things and how being positive will lead to more positive outcomes in all areas of your life. Happy Friday y’all!
I am so excited to be on this new adventure and I would love for you to join me in some aspect or another. Whether it be through reading my post, commenting, asking questions, giving advice, or sharing your stories, I believe we are all here to help each other.
Life to me is all about, love, laughter, and the pursuit of happiness. What do you love, what makes you laugh, and how can you be happy? These are questions that I am sure most, if not all, of you that have come to this site have pondered. One thing for sure, I know that having a healthy lifestyle makes all of the above easier to obtain and maintain. Actually, for me anyways, these three elements of life are a vital part of a healthy lifestyle.
Many people think that healthy only means exercising and eating properly. Healthy consist of more than just our physical health. How are we mentally, spiritually, emotionally, financially? Are we merely existing? Do we have a purpose? Is there more that we can be doing? These and a host of other questions will be examined throughout this journey.
My hopes are to encourage, motivate, and inspire others and in turn receive some encouragement, motivation, and inspiration for myself. We are all in this thing called life together, so why not work together to make it better. I look forward to hearing from you and you hearing from me as much as possible.
